Phil started racing in 1999 on an old
VFR 400 with 18000 miles on the clock. He had various
results ranging from a couple of 3rds down to 27th
usually depending on whether the VFR was running on
four, three or two cylinders!
In 2000, he bought an Aprilia RS250 and spent most of
the season finishing mid field while he tried to get to
grips with riding the two stroke. He was determined that
rather than go back to a four stroke, he would persevere
with the Aprilia in 2001, which resulted in Phil
obtaining numerous top ten finishes and a third. He used
his own determination to motivate and help his fellow
riders and was recognised for his efforts by being
awarded the Sportsman of the Year Trophy by Bemsee.
In 2002 he high sided at the first Southern Championship
meeting at Snetterton sustaining a fractured ankle and
scaphoid. After 19 weeks in plaster he returned to race
at the Brands GP circuit and took what was left of the
season to regain his form but it wasn’t until the last
Brands Hatch meet that Phil really felt that he was in
the running.
2003 saw the Aprilia with a new engine and although Phil
faced a number of mechanical traumas with it, the season
started well with most of his finishes being single
figures. Disaster was to strike again when a start line
incident caused him to be hit and run over by numerous
bikes resulting in a large pin down the inside of his
right tibia. His season was over, at a point where he
was running fourth in the Clubman Championship.
Unwilling to give up, Phil contested the
Supersport 400 Championship in 2004 but on a four stroke ZXR.
He came 5th in the Nationwide Supersport 400
Championship, 2nd in the Open 400 Championship and 4th
in the Clubman 400-650 Championship overcoming the
demons on the previous year and still in a lot of pain
from his previous injuries.
In 2005, Phil is entering the BMCRC
Supersport 400 Championship again but this year, he's
going for the win.
Phil is without a doubt, one of the most dedicated and determined
racers on the circuit. He has risen to the challenge of
adversity time and time again and still refuses to give
up. To pay for his racing, he works long hours, 7 days a
week, except when he's racing.
Phil needs sponsorship to take
away some of the financial burden and if nothing else,
to allow him to be at a race meet without being too
tired to enjoy it. Can you help?
